Our Digital Library

Operating since 1999, the American University of Armenia’s Digital Library of Classical Armenian Literature (DIGILIB) has been established as a platform for the collection, digitization, preservation, and presentation to worldwide audiences of some of the enormous cultural wealth contained in the rich holdings of the Armenian national repositories around the world.

  • DIGILIB connects researchers, libraries and institutions to vital source materials and information.
  • DIGILIB is the largest global collection of its kind, with access through state-of-the art IT technologies.
  • DIGILIB is an advanced instrument that will allow people from all over the world to access the cultural heritage of one of the oldest cultures in the world.

The significance of the Digital Library goes beyond merely digitizing 2,000 works of 625 authors. The main strength of the Armenian Digital Library is that it is a dramatically advanced method of collecting, storing, and organizing information in a digital format.  Here is how DIGILIB is different from other digital sources of information:

  • The library provides complete metadata and bibliographic references on each author and each work.
  • The digitized works do not appear as mere images of the printed books in .jpg or .pdf formats, but represent fully searchable texts, allowing word and phrase searches within the library’s database.

This instrument was developed with the use of the most advanced technologies of the 21st century and will allow Armenologists to conduct their research in a comprehensive and efficient manner. The Digital Library is not a logical extension of a physical library, but rather a method of preserving historical Armenian Literature from the 4th to the 18th centuries.

Our Donors

DIGILIB was founded in 1999, thanks to the generous support of Alice Ohanessian from Boston, who financed the digitalization of Classical Armenian Literature for the first two years.
Since 2007, the Turpanjian Family Foundation has been supporting DIGLIB's updated website and the new effort to digitize Western and Diaspora Armenian Literature.
